Environmental Information

Less plastic, more recycled
Lower environmental impact

With the aim of reducing the consumption of packaging materials, the waste generated during the process, and making a gradual transition to materials that favour recycled materials in their composition, new practices were implemented and new investments were studied, which would ensure the perfect packaging of the product and allow for a lower environmental impact in the use of packaging materials.

In 2024 we managed to maintain the downward trend that has been seen since 2018, the reference year for the “LessPlastic” project, with a 10% reduction in plastic consumption compared to the previous year, from 118,6 tonnes/year to 106,5 tonnes/year. Compared to the base year, the reduction is 40%, corresponding to a reduction of 69,9 tonnes/year.

What is the "LessPlastic" project?

The "LessPlastic" project was launched in 2018, with a dedicated team that has been working on key points associated with packaging over the last few years, including:

  • Investment in new equipment, namely palletising equipment and a hybrid shrink-wrap or cardboard packaging line
  • Promoting the use of cardboard boxes instead of shrink wrap
  • Selection of materials that favour recycled contente

Plastic with recycled content consolidates growing trend in 2024
recycled content exceeds
2023 target

The use of recycled plastic has been consistently integrated into the Vicaima Group’s industrial processes. Our focus on research and the development of solutions in collaboration with our suppliers has been key to identifying effective packaging options that are well-suited to our product range.

For 2024, the Vicaima Group set a target to ensure that 50% of plastic consumed contained at least 30% recycled material, and this figure was exceeded. Thus, in the reporting year, we reached an overall figure of 54% plastic consumption incorporating recycled materials and specifically in the Vicaima Limited achieved a record 100%.

New hybrid technology promotes the use of cardboard packaging

In 2022 we installed a new door packaging line at Vicaima Indústria, which combines shrink wrap and carton packaging technologies in a single line and can be carried out in individual operations or in combined mode.

This investment allows us to use shrink-wrap with a 20% reduction in grammage, reducing waste by the width of the plastic used, particularly in setup changes and lower energy consumption in the tunnel.

Throughout 2024, we continued two ongoing continuous improvement projects focused on reducing plastic consumption and optimising the dimensions of plastic reels, projects that began the previous year, and we started a new project aimed at optimising the size of fan-fold cardboard used to produce cardboard boxes in line and automatically.

In this context, we started by replacing plastic packaging with cardboard boxes in the Portaro technical solutions range (fire-resistant, acoustic, and security doors).

This measure will be progressively extended to other product ranges, with the implementation for the finished doors with machining expected in 2025.
